Getting from the Cancun Airport to Playa:

The Cancun Airport has three terminals, but you will arrive in terminal 3 (which is a fairly new terminal for those of you that have been here before). After getting off the plane you have to go through Mexican Immigration. They check your passport and give you a tourist visa with a limit on how many days you can stay in Mexico. Keep that card, you will turn it back in when you leave!

After Immigration is over, you can get your checked bags from the carousel. You should have your baggage claim tickets with you, they some times check these to make sure you aren't stealing any bags. Head for the Customs line. In the Customs line you push a button. If it is green you keep on going. If it is red, you get searched! So leave your illegal items and firearms at home.

After Customs you walk down a hallway where there are several counters selling car rentals, etc. On the left will be the ADO counter (it's red and near the end). Purchase your ticket here if you are taking the bus (see schedule below). The cost is $8 USD to Playa. You can also purchse it at the bus if no one happens to be at this counter.

Once exiting terminal 3, walk to the left and you should see a sign "Meeting Place." Past that is where you catch the shuttle. There is a sign that says to Terminals 1 and 2 and the white van also says it on the side. Once at terminal 2, walk south to end of the terminal and you should see the large buses that say ADO on the sides. Playa del Carmen will be displayed as the destination in the front window, don't take the one labeled Cancun. If the bus isn't there, just hang out and wait for it.

There are three different ways to get from the airport in Cancun to Playa.

1. Taxis. They are expensive approximately 60 dollars for the whole taxi (3 people) but luggage is tight. The advantage of the taxi is that it will take you directly to the hotel and stop for beer if you want on the way. You can drink as a passenger in a car in Mexico! Taxis are all over the place outside of both terminals 3 and 2.

2. Private Transfers. Transfers are nice because they cater to you! No waiting in lines, plenty of room (they hold between 5-10 people) and the driver can drop you off at your hotel directly. Some will stop for beer, not all! The cost is $180 USD for between 5-10 people (flat rate). Just send Tony and Cheri an email if you are interested in booking a private transfer.

3. Bus! The bus is cheap, $ 8 a person! They are nice too, reclining chairs, A/C, and usually a dubbed over American movie on the TV! To take the bus, which is what we suggest, you need to buy a ticket at the ticket counter or at the bus itself. The bus runs about every hour and sometimes you have to wait a while to catch it, but you can buy a beer while you wait, you just can't bring any beer on the bus anymore, sorry (unless you sneak it!).
